The Main gateway was&nbsp;<\/em><strong>constructed in the year 1632-1638<\/strong><em>&nbsp;and is said to be designed by the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etajmahaltour.com\/architecture-of-taj-mahal.html\">architect of the Taj Mahal<\/a><em>&nbsp;himself &#8211; Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The main gateway is a structure which is&nbsp;<\/em><strong>93ft high and is 150ft wide<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This gateway is a double storied building built with the use of&nbsp;<\/em><strong>Red Sandstone<\/strong><em>. The gateway is another example as to how much&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etajmahaltour.com\/shah-jahan-taj-mahal.html\">Prince Shah Jahan<\/a><em>&nbsp;was in love with symmetries and patterns throughout his life. This vertical gateway is one of the&nbsp;<\/em><strong>most important gateways amongst the five entries to the Taj Mahal<\/strong><em>. The architecture of gateway is also one thing which is being marveled at by the archaeologists and even the first time visitors of the place. The doorway has the shape of an ogival arch which reaches mid-height of the whole of gateway structure. The gate is adorned at the corners with&nbsp;<\/em><strong>octagonal shaped towers<\/strong><em>&nbsp;which are covered by open domed pavilions. It is also marked by&nbsp;<\/em><strong>11 umbrella shaped cupolas<\/strong><em>&nbsp;which are made up of marbles which constitute the central portion of the gateway.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The gateway in itself is one elaborate structure. It is marked by rooms with twists and branches leading to hallways created with the motive to confuse the person who is entering into the monument of the Taj Mahal. These rooms have never ever been used for anything for over 3 centuries. The main gateway is built as such that it creates an optical trick that as you move&nbsp;<\/em><strong>closer to the gate, the Taj keeps getting smaller and as you walk away it seems to grow in size<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The main gateway of the Taj Mahal also stands out because it is inscribed with Hindu motifs. It is also&nbsp;<\/em><strong>adorned with Arabic calligraphy from Quran inlaid in black stone<\/strong><em>. The main gateway of the Taj Mahal is characterized by an image of a&nbsp;<\/em><strong>white teardrop with a red trident<\/strong><em>, located above the pointed niche. The gateway is the best evidence of Hindu influence in Mughal architecture. The motifs of flowers, red lotuses, leaves and vines ornament the sloping sides of the gateway depict the effect of Hindu architecture.
